Col. John Glenn was a military aviator, pioneering astronaut, and U.S. senator. Glenn served as a combat pilot in World War II and the Korean War, earning numerous decorations. Selected as one of the original "Mercury Seven" astronauts, he became the first American to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962, aboard Friendship 7. This historic flight bolstered U.S. prestige during the Space Race.
After retiring from NASA, Glenn transitioned to politics, serving as a U.S. Senator from Ohio from 1974 to 1999. He focused on issues like nuclear proliferation and veterans' affairs. Remarkably, Glenn returned to space at age 77 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998, becoming the oldest person to fly in space.
John Glenn received numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. He passed away on December 8, 2016, at age 95. Glenn's legacy as a trailblazer in space exploration and public service continues to inspire generations.
