On April 24, 2004, United States Coast Guard Petty Officer Nathan Bruckenthal, was engaged in a maritime interception operation in the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In the early evening, a suspicious dhow was observed approaching a coalition oil platform. Not heeding directions, a boarding group boarded a rigid hull inflatable boat, taking off in pursuit of the target.
Unfortunately, as the crew was poised to board the dhow, an explosion was detonated. Bruckenthal, along with U.S. Navy sailors Christopher Watts and Michael Pernaselli, made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Petty Officer Nathan Bruckenthal was the first Coast Guardsman killed in combat since Vietnam. His legacy endures, marked by posthumous honors such as the Bronze Star with V device and the Purple Heart. The Coast Guard cutter Nathan Bruckenthal was named in his honor, serving as a lasting tribute to his courage and dedication.
