Duty & Valor - Military Stories of Courage and Sacrifice

The tragic fate of the Lady Be Good and her crew #shorts #history #podcast

In April 1943, a B-24D Liberator named Lady Be Good and her nine man crew departed a Libyan airstrip for a mission over Naples. While sandstorms forced most planes to turn back, Lady Be Good pressed on.
Losing sight of the formation, Lady eventually reversed course for home, only to vanish.
Ground crew failed to respond to Lady's request for navigation help. This led them to miss their base, exhaust their fuel, and ultimately parachute into the unforgiving Libyan desert as the plane crashed.
After British geologists stumbled upon her wreckage in 1958, a tragic truth emerged.
Faced with a desperate choice, the crew opted to head northwest with minimal supplies. Tragically, not a single member survived. The last man standing walked a staggering 111 miles. Here's the heartbreaking twist: a mere 16 miles south, they would have found Lady Be Good – astonishingly well-preserved, with stockpiles of food, water, functional machine guns, and even a working radio.
A fatal miscalculation sealed their fate. Copilot Lieutenant Robert F. Toner documented their ordeal in a diary found with his remains. His final words? A poignant plea – "Still waiting for help, still praying."
