Duty & Valor - Military Stories of Courage and Sacrifice

Medal of Honor Day is March 25

Since Private Jacob Parrot earned the first Medal of Honor during the Civil War, it has been awarded 3,536 times to 3,517 individuals. Nineteen of the men were awarded the medal more than once.

Among the recipients, only one woman has earned the medal, Dr. Mary Walker during the Civil War.

Army personnel earned the medal 2,458 times,
the Navy 749, Marine Corps 300, Air Force 19, and Coast Guard once.

The sole Coast Guard recipient was Signalman First Class Douglas Munro during WWII.

Not all recipients live to personally receive the medal as 19% of them were awarded posthumously.

77% of recipients were enlisted personnel and 23% were officers.

There are currently 63 living medal of honor recipients.

Let us unite, a nation forever grateful, to honor the courage and sacrifice of these living legends.
