Discover the heroic story of US Coast Guard SCPO Terrell Horne and his selfless acts of bravery.
On the night of December 2, 2012, SCPO Terrell Horne was serving aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Halibut when a suspected smuggling vessel was spotted by an aerial patrol off the coast of Santa Cruz Island, California. Horne, and a boarding team, gave chase in a pursuit boat. As they approached the suspected smugglers, the target boat accelerated towards them without changing course. Reacting quickly, PO Horne pushed the coxswain out of harm's way, but he and a fellow shipmate were thrown into the water. The two men were quickly recovered. However, PO Horne was transported to a hospital where he later passed due to his severe head injuries. The two smugglers were arrested and convicted of charges related to the incident, including one of them being convicted of murder. For his heroic actions that night, SCOP Terrell Horne was awarded the Coast Guard Medal.
