In 1971, the year George Strait eloped and married Norma Voss, he joined the United States Army as an infantryman. At Schofield Barracks in Hawaii with the 25th Infantry Division, Strait seized an opportunity to showcase his musical talents by auditioning for and joining an Army-sponsored country music band called "Rambling Country". They also performed off-base as "Santee".
While still stationed in Hawaii, George and Norma welcomed their first child, Jenifer. George served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1975, and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. Following his discharge, Strait returned to pursuing his musical ambitions, eventually achieving immense success in the country music industry. With his distinctive voice and iconic country sound, George Strait became one of the best-selling artists of all time, shaping the course of country music for decades.
