The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on June 17, 1775, during the early stages of the American Revolutionary War. Fought on the outskirts of Boston, Massachusetts, it saw the American colonists, predominantly militia and minutemen, facing the British Army. Despite the name, most of the fighting occurred on nearby Breed's Hill.
The American forces, under the command of Colonel William Prescott, constructed fortifications during the night leading up to the battle. As the British, led by Major General William Howe, launched frontal assaults, the colonists, armed with limited ammunition, withstood two attacks before eventually succumbing on the third assault due to ammunition shortages.
Although the British technically won the battle, their victory came at a high cost. The American forces, with their disciplined defense, inflicted significant casualties on the British, showcasing the colonists' ability to stand up against a professional army. The Battle of Bunker Hill bolstered American morale, proving that they could effectively challenge the mighty British military. It became a symbolic precursor to the larger conflict, fostering a growing sense of independence and determination among the American colonists.
