We almost lost an acting and directing legend before his first role. In 1951, while a Private in the Army, 21 year old Clint Eastwood was the passenger on a US Navy Douglas AD-1 Skyraider en route to Ft. Ord, CA. The plane developed multiple problems mid-flight. Oxygen supplies dwindled, radios went out, and the unforgiving California fog closed in. With fuel running low, the pilot was forced to ditch the aircraft in the Pacific Ocean near Point Reyes, CA. Luckily, both Eastwood and the pilot, Lt. Francis Anderson, survived and escaped on separate life rafts. As Eastwood neared shore, He was knocked off his raft by the waves, forcing him to swim two miles to shore in the frigid waters, which he later found out was a shark breeding ground. The experience likely contributed to the stoic demeanor and rugged resilience often portrayed in his iconic film roles, cementing his status as a cinematic legend known for facing adversity head-on.
