The 442nd Regimental Combat Team stands as a symbol of unparalleled heroism and sacrifice, earning its place as the most decorated military unit in U.S. history.
Composed almost entirely of second-generation Japanese Americans, or Nisei, these soldiers faced widespread discrimination at home during World War II. Yet, they volunteered to serve, determined to prove their loyalty to a country that often questioned their allegiance. Their motto, "Go For Broke," perfectly captured their unwavering commitment to give everything they had.
The 442nd fought with extraordinary valor in campaigns across Italy, France, and Germany.
Among their most famous actions was the daring rescue of the "Lost Battalion" in France. Battling through heavily fortified German lines, they saved 211 trapped soldiers, but the price was steep, with over 800 casualties in that mission alone.
In just 20 days of fierce fighting in Germany, they earned five of their seven Presidential Unit Citations—a feat unmatched by any other unit.
Their courage and sacrifice were recognized with 18,000 individual decorations, including over 4,000 Purple Hearts, 4,000 Bronze Stars, and 21 Medals of Honor.
